The show is by Karolina Szumilas, who was born in Poland and moved to the United States at the age of 14. In Poland she had loved acting and traveled in different performances but moving to the States left her without her creative voice. A year into living here she found painting, it was a way to have a voice through images instead of language and it has been her most beloved art form since.

This is her third solo show, in this new series, titled “At Night”, she is working at a larger scale, with more freedom and playfulness to her process. Beginning by doing plein-air sketches in Sumi ink to capture a unique perspective she then finishes them in oil paints in her studio. The magical realism of “At Night” is a wonderful sojourn into possibility. Szumilas often uses the light of both the sun and moon to transport the viewer into her magical world, a trip worth taking. The show will be up from March 8th - April 26th.
