COMMITTED

These are my L E G A C Y.

This project started many years ago, it began when I heard one line in one poem... "(What) if there is a god, who thinks that we are god? Do we hear her prayer, do we?" - from The Million Man March by Kurtis Lamkin. I was an atheist when I heard this but something about the question landed. What if we are being asked to do, to make, to take action, perhaps even to be an answer to a prayer, but we have to be willing to hear it. Especially if that prayer comes from our own hearts.

I have spent the last year listening to the prayer of my own heart and it's request that I bring these into the world. Listening is done in the quiet of the self, and for me it takes lots of time to quiet everything down enough inside that I can hear, truly hear. So I heard, make giant Totem Lamps and call them LEGACY. Because they are about; inheritance both genetic and cultural, the stacking of generational choice, our individual and collective selves and the growth they are here to do. Totems because upon each decade, generation, and epoch... time and all the choices of those who preceded us is stacked. Bringing us each to this present moment, to the work we are here to do, and to the question of the legacy we leave for the future.

I planned every aspect of their becoming and at times it has felt as though they would be my undoing. In order to say YES to this, I said NO to a lot. Each no helped make my path clear. I felt they were missing in the world, and we needed them. I needed them. I needed to experience committing to such a big dream that it took months to make, to design and plan. I want you to listen to your own deep self...what is it asking of you, what is missing in the world?

Is it: More beauty? More true stories? More real talk? A new vision for the future? I don't know what it is you feel is missing but I do know what it means to commit to bringing that thing into the world. It means it's with you everyday, everywhere you go, in each conversation, moment and time. You never really set it all the way down it's churning, integrating even while your mind watches a show, ties your shoes, or goes for a hike. I would say it haunts you until you do it. As this project has haunted me the past year and now I feel free of it. Lighter and brighter and excited to hear what else needs to be brought into the world by my hands, my heart.

And I hope you take a moment to discover what you are being asked to bring in too.

May my love reach you all, always.
